MARIOS JEWELLERS

Marios Jewellers was established in 1965. Not everyone knows the extraordinary humble personal story of the man who started it all, Marios Theodoropoulos. Marios was born in 1948 in a small village in the Peloponnese region of Greece. This region is famous for stories like The Trojan War, and it was here that the Greek War of Independence began in 1821. During the 19th and early 20th Century the region became relatively poor and economically isolated. A significant part of the population emigrated to larger cities in Greece or other international countries.

Marios took it upon himself to leave his family at the tender age of sixteen to pursue a better life elsewhere, and chose to emigrate to Cape Town, South Africa. He was blessed to come across a highly talented Swiss watchmaker Kurt Busa who took him on as his apprentice and trained him up to be a fully fledged watchmaker. Marios worked for Kurt Busa for two years and during this time he met his beautiful supportive wife, Chrisoula. Marios and Chrisoula discovered that they had sharp entrepreneurial instinct and made the decision to set off on their own and establish a jewellery retail store in Woodstock and from there they gradually created a retail network of five stores around Cape Town. As the years went by, they decided to scale down their business and today they own one exquisite store in Canal Walk, Century City.
